OFFSKATES TRAINING: usually 30 minutes prior to practice time, except on Sunday when it is always the first 30 minutes of practice.
If you have skating in your background, speed skating, figure skating or roller hockey, please let us know when you arrive! It’s not a requirement, but if you have not been on skates in a long time, we suggest you attend an open skate at least once to remember how it feels!
If you are really considering wanting to become a derby skater, please understand that we do not take our commitment lightly. This league is for the skaters, by the skaters. We are a DIY organization and as such we all commit to rigorous training, a number of fundraisers, paying monthly dues, and of course having fun and competing around the United States. We have training requirements that all skaters adhere to. We abide by a code of conduct as this is a full contact sport and what happens on the track, stays on the track. IT’S NOT PERSONAL! It’s Derby. Yes, playing the sport is fun, but just like in any full contact sport, injuries occur!
You will need to acquire your own speed skates, high quality knee pads, elbow pads, and wrist guards, Helmet and a mouth guard. (Please see our Sponsorship link for ROLLER GIRL SKATES to purchase your gear!) We dont want you wasting your money, therefor we will give you a list of appropriate brands to look for and help you purchase skates within your individual price range that are still quality equipment. If you are the type of person who just cant wait to buy your gear and skates then please contact us via email or stop by practice and we will assist you in your purchase prior to your orientation date. This is a contact sport and quality equipment and gear is needed to keep you safe on the track.
You are encouraged to sustain your own medical insurance. We do not cover injuries. We have liability insurance for the league when we play, however, this does not cover your injuries.
VOLUNTEER
And Be Part Of An Amazing Organization!
If you are not quite sure you want to get hit, we still need volunteers! We cannot play roller derby without the support of our volunteer staff! What skills can you bring to the table? Are you a potential Ref? Have you worked events before at the door, or assisted a sports team in the past and just love the thought of being a part of the organization? No matter how small a contribution, you are the reason we can succeed!!! Please contact us or come to our next orientation night to find out how you can get involved.
REFEREE!!!
We are always looking for referees!
Want to be part of the team but not interested in getting hit constantly by others? Are you still drawn to the excitment of women tearing each other up? Are you a man but love the sport of womens roller derby?
How about being a referee? Anyone can be part of our referee and officials staff! If you are interested come to one of our scheduled Orientation nights to find out how to become a referee. We will explain the training process and how to learn the rules.
The players don't abuse the officials.............most of the time.
